FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Label Gator Brand™ (LGB)
Integrated Labeling System
What is the LGB Labeling System?
The LGB labeling system consists of a material handling conveyor that transports pots and/or trays through automated apply and/or print and apply stations. The apply heads are fully synchronized to conveyor speed via PLC communication with a frame-mounted encoder.
What differentiates the LGB labeling system from other labelers?
The LGB labeling system utilizes proprietary PLC communication to fully integrate conveyor speed, printing, label application and secondary processing functions.
How many people are required to operate the LGB labeling system?
Staffing can range from 0 to 2 people. If the LGB labeling system is tied directly to down-stream and up-stream conveyors, no people are required. For complete stand-alone operation, up to 2 people are required.
How fast does the LGB labeling system apply labels? What is the conveyor speed?
The LGB labeling system can apply labels at an unprecedented rate. For example, the LGB “apply only” labeling system can process up to eighty 606 trays per minute (3 labels on each side). Belt speed is variable up to 130 feet/minute.
How long does it take to set up the LGB labeling system?
Initial set-up takes approximately 15 minutes.
How quick can the LGB labeling system be changed-over from one product/label to another?
Changeover is a snap with the LGB labeling system. Experienced operators can change-over labels, trays or both in less than 5 minutes.
What is the payback (ROI) on a LGB labeling system?
The ROI is generally less than 6-months. An easy-to-use Payback Calculator is available by following this link.
Can the Print & Apply model “apply-only” (i.e. pre-printed labels)?
Yes – this is accomplished by simply by-passing the print head when setting up the web.
Can the LGB labeling system run multiples pot configurations?
Yes. The LGB labeling system is easily changed-over for a wide variety of pot sizes and configurations. This is done by simply calling-up the part number on the flat screen monitor, pressing the part number on the touch screen, adjusting the apply heads and loading the new pot on the conveyor.
How repeatable is label placement?
The LGB labeling system can repeatedly place labels within a tolerance of +/- .040 inch in both horizontal and vertical plains.
Will the LGB labeling system meet private labeling specs?
Yes – GLL is a specialist in the horticulture label market. We are well versed in labeled requirements of “Big Box” retailers such as Wal-Mart and others. These current and future requirements have been fully considered in the LGB labeling system design.
How durable is the LGB labeling system in a horticulture production environment?
The LGB labeling system will operate reliably in the most demanding horticultural production environments. Simple daily maintenance is all that is required for years of trouble-free operation.
How does the LGB labeling system apply labels?
The LGB labeling system employs wipe-on (merge) applicators in most cases. This is a unique feature of the LGB that provides the highest level of consistency, durability and ease of operation in a production environment. Other application methods are available, such as Tamp-Blow when needed (i.e. shipping dock labeling).
Can label set-up data be saved?
Yes. Set-up data can be entered and saved in the LGB labeling system. This information is easily retrieved by the production operator by way of a touch screen.
What happens if the conveyor is stopped during operation?
The conveyor can be stopped during operation, even if the applicators are in mid-sequence. When the conveyor resumes movement, so will the applicators.
Can the conveyor speed be changed on-the-fly?
Yes, the LGB labeling system applicators will automatically stay in sync with the conveyor form full-stop to full-speed.
How are the printers/labelers synchronized with the conveyor?
The conveyor, label applicator, product detect sensor and encoder are all mounted to the same fixed frame. Synchronization is accomplished via a proprietary algorithm that correlates actual belt speed (measured by a frame mounted encoder) to part position relative to the applicator.
Will the LBG labeling system directly integrate with other production equipment?
Yes – secondary processing equipment can be directly connected to our on-board PLC. The LGB control system will power the labeling conveyor only when mating systems are able to accept containers for processing. The controller can also communicate with up and/or down stream processing equipment to ensure they do not operate when the LGB conveyor is in a shut-down condition.
Is compressed air required to operator the LGBN labeling system?
No – The LGB labeling system operates on a standard 110V/15A connection when wipe-on (merge) application heads are employed. In certain areas, (shipping area labeling with short average label runs). Tamp-Blow labeling heads may be recommended. Tamp-Blow labeling requires air pressure for operation.
Can any label stock be used on the LGB labeling system?
Yes, however, GLL manufacturers a line of high quality labels that are designed specifically for the horticulture industry. GLL horticulture labels are offered at a competitive cost and will optimize the performance of our LGB labeling systems.
How much floor space does the LGB labeling system consume?
Apply only systems – 126” Long x 84” Wide
Print & Apply systems – 120” Long x 120” Wide
What is the lead-time for delivery of an LGB system?
Standard lead time for a LGB labeling system is 4 weeks ARO.
