Last month, we looked at how pet gardens attract younger gardeners and how growers create impactful labels for the trend. Now that the weather is warmer, it’s time to really focus on creating an outdoor space wildlife, and pets alike, will adore. It’s time to take your indoor pet garden outside.

Pollinator Plants

Although bees and butterflies aren’t often pets, consider how pollinator plants impact pets. Don’t want your dog to get stung? Create a notation on the plant label that since it attracts bees, it should be planted away from a pet’s favorite hangout, if possible. If this is not possible, especially with balcony spaces, suggest height to keep plants out of reach.

Waterscapes For All Animals

Cats love to hunt for water, dogs get a lot of use out of water bowls, and even bees need a water source. While ponds offer a space to house fish, and create a water source, smaller designs are possible. Take the indoor pet garden concept outdoors. Plant a water bowl in the ground surrounded by cat nip or cat grass. Inspirational images of arrangements are perfect label design additions! Again, remember to include balcony spaces! A small arrangement of cat nip, cat grass and a water bowl easily transitions from outside to in for the winter.

Create A Buzz

For bees, they need to be able to stand on dry stones when drinking. Create a smaller, rocky waterscape near (or in) their pollinator plants. Customers buy pollinator plants, in part, to save the bees. Show them how to contribute even more to growing the bee population by creating a more habitable garden.

Pest Control is Important Too

It’s just as important to show customers how to create a pet friendly garden as it is to offer natural, simple solutions to pet control. Push plants that deter specific animals, and create packages, or arrangements, that include any helpful gardening tools. Again, this even applies to pollinator plants. While bees may not bother some pets, other curious creatures need boundaries set.

Take Indoor Pet Gardens Outside

Pets love to climb and explore. Trees, pet friendly statues or structures, and even decorative rocks, all create intrigue. Even a sensory garden path, using different stepping stones, bricks, mosses and grasses, provides enjoyment for pets and people alike. Create an in-store display that highlights how a space can be both beautiful and pet friendly. Or, host an online webinar on the topic. Even with labels, a simple QR code links customers to videos and blogs on the topic.

Label Design Impacts Your Customers

How you design your label impacts your customers on an inspirational and educational level. How can you provide the information they need right there in store? Or, how can you add to your packaging instead of redesigning your current label?

Create Design Variations

Have variations of your labels for the same plant to attract different types of customers. By using labeling technology, or even a simple QR code, these labels easily link customers to more information. Offer blogs, video tutorials or app and link them here. Create a unique hashtag to celebrate pollinator plants and let your customers connect with each other. Write up a simple tea recipe. Or, make a video talking about creating pet friendly outdoor spaces. Then, customers easily pick the container which provides pertinent information and continue to engage with you as a grower after they take the plant home.

Secondary Labels For Pet Gardens Outside
Secondary and Booklet-Style Labels Expand Content

A secondary label and booklet-style label both offer extra space to provide information. Now, use extra panels to talk about the ways a safe pet garden is created right there on the package. This increases the chance that customers will read and engage with the information. While a link is great, immediate access to information is better. Creating a product line of pet friendly plants makes it even easier for customers to see what works well together.

Overlabeling Great Lakes Label

Re-Label and Over-Label With Ease Each Season

So, you’ve created a new label. Now what? Well, over-labeling is made easy with these color blocking labels. Otherwise, pull the labels off, and run them through a Label Gator. Whether you pull off the labels, or leave them on, adding the new label is done quickly and easily with automation. Not only does it save time, but also money and labor. It lets you get back to growing with ease.

Inspiration Is Key

Oftentimes, we see beautiful floral gardens advertised on labels. So, mix it up. Show customers cute pets loving the fresh air. Imagery is a powerful thing. If a customer sees a dog on their label, they’ll assume it’s pet friendly.

By creating a cohesive series, you also show customers which plants go well together. Add this label aesthetic onto gardening accessories too! What tools do you have to offer that help build a safe, healthy space for pets?

Make sure to incorporate those with balconies too. How can an apartment pet enjoy a more natural balcony space? Creating small arrangements suited for balconies is a start. Heck, even add the water bowl into the arrangement to really inspire your customers!
