Why Edibles Extend the Sales Season
One reason provided at the previously mentioned town hall forum was that edibles will always be seen as a necessity. In order to survive we need to eat, so edibles are one way people can save money, or control what happens to the food they eat. So, it makes for a smarter investment.
Gardeners are also more likely to keep their herbs and food bearing plants in the kitchen. They want to keep the plants right where they need them most. So, if they are already learning how to grow plants indoors, this idea can be extended. With foodscaping growing in popularity, growers can show their customers how to take the trend indoors.
Labeling’s Impact
Create labels to promote edibles and indoor gardening throughout the winter. A booklet-style label provides space to offer up suggestions to create an arrangement. Or, it can use smart labeling techniques to offer tutorials on how to grow the item. The easier it is for customers to develop their gardening skills, the more likely they are to return.
Millennials
An interesting point the town hall forum brought up was that Millennials are growing food. With this tough to reach demographic on board, introduce them to other plants. Once you lure these young adults in with succulents and edibles, they’ll develop a curiosity and want to do more. Provide them with the resources they need to grow successfully, continue learning and find the benefits in gardening, and you’ll have a customer for life.
