Moon gardening offers the opportunity to enhance growers’ landscapes in a unique way. However, it does not mean that gardening takes place at night. Instead, make these long summer days feel even longer.

So, what is moon gardening?

Moon gardening is creating a space that enjoyable any time of day. Even when gathered around a backyard bonfire, or gazing out over the city from a balcony, there’s so much to take in. This means it’s important to play with fragrance, texture, and light. On hot summer days, cool evenings are a reprise from the blazing sun. By showing customers how to enjoy their outdoor spaces during this time of day, you develop an interest in horticulture as a whole. Essentially, inspiration becomes return purchases.

Light Up The Space

Whether it’s beautiful lanterns or glow in the dark stepping stones, good lighting is important. People need to see their way around the space, even if the goal is to sit around a bonfire. Consider how glowing plants uniquely enhance spaces. On balconies, tea light candles are all that is likely needed to create a warm ambiance. Hygge is trending, so take inventory of all light-oriented offerings you offer and make sure they create a warm, welcoming space.

Texture Customers Will Want to Touch

Much like a sensory garden, it’s important to maximize all the senses when darkness falls. Blooms, foliage, twigs, and even grasses all catch the light differently. So, they also create different shadows and visual texture than they do in the daytime. On a tactile level, the various textures delight the senses. Instead of focussing on how to light up the textures, consider what your customers will actually feel. A path of differing grasses, mosses and stones engage this sense for the bare foot.

Fragrance Worth Smelling

Again, when the light is dim, the other senses come alive. Fragrant blooms make the space much more welcoming. This also goes and in hand with sensory gardening.

The Best Moon Garden Plants

There are three considerations when promoting moon garden plants:

First, a plant that blooms at night is obvious, but it’s still important to emphasize how that looks in the garden. So, then you have silver foliage and white blooms. They both appear to illuminate when they reflect little bits of light. Use this to your advantage and promote how these plants make the light reach further with greater impact.

The Overall Mood

The intention of a moon garden is to create a space that seemingly extends a day. It’s a garden which is so enticing, you just have to spend more time in it. So, it’s a concept that excited now and experienced gardeners alike. It’s also flexible. Any space, possibly even an indoor space, is capable of taking advantage. The intent is to mindfully step away from the television, and spend some time seeing the world in a new light (or lack thereof). It’s yet another example of a value point plants offer.

Dealing With Mosquitos

A major deterrent from spending time outside at night are the amount of pesky mosquitos there are. There are a few solutions worth offering at your store. First, bats. Bat houses are also one element to creating a pet garden which may interest the younger generations. A mosquito net canopy is another option. Plants and light can even be added inside to create a seamless effect. Or, try promoting mosquito repelling plants such as marigolds, lemon grass, or even catnip, which again, works in conjunction with pet gardens.

Great Label Design is Key

Moon gardening is all about great design, so the labels need to also be designed with care. Use inspiring product photography that shows off plants in the day and the nighttime as well. Or, expand on the content you’re already providing.

Booklet-Style Labels Open Up Possibilities

A booklet-style label offers extended content and even tactile appeal. Use the pages to provide more information on mosquito repellant plants, reflective plants, or nighttime blooms. Or, provide inspirational photos of the item in the yard at night. Even provide recommendations for accompanying garden plants and items to create a more enticing space.

Labeling Technology Links Customers To A World of Information

Labeling technology like NFC (Near Field Communication), and even simple QR codes, link customers to in-depth information. Link customers to thorough videos, blogs, and webpages that offer information on growing a successful moon garden. Even a hashtag shows growers that you’re available for them at their convenience. Then, it provides the opportunity to engage as they share images of their new nighttime spaces.

Apply Secondary Labels With Ease

A secondary label goes a long way. Even a picture of the plant in the yard at night with the phrase “mosquito repellent” says enough. Now your customer can envision the item in their own garden, plus the benefits it offers. There’s no need to redesign your current label when a secondary label applies easily with labeling automation.
