Looking ahead and using trends within the industry, here are the top 10 perennials for 2017. These predictions are based on products greenhouses have published as selling next year, as well as publications with extensive lists of hot plants for the next season.

Top 10 Perennials for 2017

1. Gaudi Violet

Adenophora, or “lady bells” are plants with bell like flowers which bloom through early summer to early fall. This hardy plant can survive in a variety of temperatures and light exposures.

2. Echinacea

Also known as Coneflowers, these are optimal for butterfly enthusiasts. This is a fairly easy care plant which can survive during drought.

3. Coreopsis

Coreopsis, or Tickseed, is tolerant of a variety of soil types and conditions. These plants require more water than the previous plants mentioned, but over all, it is a low maintenance plant.

4. Dianthus

Carnation is Dianthus’ more common name. This species can emit a spicy fragrance which fills the garden. These plants are a little more finicky, requiring lots of light, well-drained, alkaline soil and watering only at the base of the plant. Dianthus is best for a more experience customer.

5. Gaillardia

Also known as Blanket Flowers, Gaillardias are another plant that might be best for more experienced gardeners since they attract pests. They require full sun, or mostly sunny spots, but the long bloom payoff is worth it.

6. Hibiscus

This plant adds a tropical touch to any garden. Depending on location, planting hibiscus helps with keeping the plant in its ideal location. These plants thrive in hot and humid environments.

7. Phlox

These low maintenance wild flowers are partial to evenly moist, rich soil and partial sun. If these plants are outdoors, watering is a must in dry climates.

8. Lavender

Lavender is an herb which requires full sun. While they will flower better if kept moist, these are still drought resistant plants. The strong essential oils on this plant, while calming, are also pest deterrents.

9. Salvia

Salvia, or Sage, provides an aromatic smell much like lavender. They are heat and drought tolerant plants which bloom throughout the summer.

10. Helenium

These flowers come in a variety of colors, but are a little bit picky with environment. They require direct sunlight, and dryer conditions, but still need frequent water.
