As populations grow in metropolitan areas, and cities encourage urban gardening, horticulture is transforming. In Paris, the city is asking residents to get creative with where they grow. Whether that be on the sides of buildings, or by sidewalks, people are experimenting. The city even provides a starter kit of seeds and topsoil to citizens. While urban gardening develops, so will community gardens.

Urban Community Gardens on side of building

Paris is Not an Isolated Case

Grand Rapids, Michigan

David McKenzie created installations for Art Prize composed of fence gardens.  Of his 2013 work, McKenzie said, “My piece, Back to Eden was inspired by my desire to give people a look at what the future might hold if we were to cover some our country and steel structures with plant material.” It’s a similar message to Paris’, and one focussed on the future.

Toronto

Toronto is developing a park covering Union station’s tracks to connect neighborhoods and bring life to the downtown core. City Councilor, Joe Cressy said, “”If you live in a condo, the park becomes your backyard.” While this development isn’t focussed on citizens creating their own gardens, the park is being erected for similar reasons. The focus is on bringing cleaner air and creating a more pleasing city overall.

New York City

New York City’s Highline is an attraction for both art and nature lovers alike. Not only that, but this structure is sustainable and environmentally conscious. It repurposes old train tracks and allows plants to retain much of the rain water they receive. It has become a fantastic way for city dwellers to get a breath of fresh of air while they travel the city.

Community Gardens’ Impact

This form of gardening has always been an integral part of brining the community together with fresh produce. With the rise of urban gardening, you will see an expansion in community gardens as well. The American Community Garden Association provides a map displaying gardens in your area.  Various extensions also provide valuable information and resources. As these gardens grow, communities will become more educated about plants and produce.

How Does This Effect Greenhouse Sales?

As urban populations are able to expand their gardening space, this will impact the way greenhouses sell. If North American cities take the route Paris did, you can expect to sell gardening kits to city officials who will distribute them to citizens. Kits and combinations are trending to be more useful and important than ever.

It’s likely that younger generations will develop more of an interest in gardening and plant care. This could increase sales or the interest future generations will have in developing their green thumbs. It also means that in time you will be able to sell more than succulents and hardy plants to them. As their knowledge, interest and explore increases, so will their desire for a challenge.
