Last week we discussed how teaching customers about propagation can create loyal shoppers. Today we’re taking a more in depth look at how some DIY hacks and online tutorials can cause disappointment and disengagement. While some customers may still be interested in gardening after a failed DIY hack, others, especially beginners, may not. Promote quality, alternatives and debunk myths in order to engage these customers before they lose interest entirely.

Example of a DIY Hack Fail

Last year a trend of dyeing succulents with food coloring and water went viral. As many unhappy people discovered, the dye wasn’t working. Not only that, but they would let the succulents sit in the water or overwater which can obviously cause root rot. This leaves a bad impression on gardening as a whole and may lead customers to consider themselves “black thumbs.”

Greenhouse Quality For The Win

In the comments of the above video, people claim that the trend is a rouse and the succulents are really painted. Some claim that their succulents changed colors after a longer period of time. Both of those explanations to the failure may prove true. That said, holding a seminar, craft night or crafting station at your greenhouse can stop rumors and bad information from spreading. Along the way, you also build a relationship and a dependability with your customers.

Labeling’s Impact

To prevent unhappy customers and a loss of interest from beginners, greenhouses could label alternatives. Add a label with some simple product photography of plant paint you offer. Incorporate a tip about root rot on your existing label. Include a small QR code which links to a video blog that busts trend myths. Your customers will leave happier and more educated, increasing the chance of a return trip.
