[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]succulent plants Succulents have become a sudden fascination. There hasn’t been a plant group, that I can recall, that has burst into the market and caught the attention of such a wide range of people so quickly – until now.

What are some of the characteristics that foster this succulent craze?

The mere architecture of these amazing little plants has strong appeal.

Succulents come in all shapes and sizes –

This includes mounds, bowls, columns, spikes, stars, and rosettes. Some form mats, some even seem to form families (complete with clinging babies), while others actually vine and twine. A few are wart-like, and a few are like oysters. Some even look like warts on oysters. Their array of colors seem to be endless and new varieties appear on the market every day, fulfilling the needs of a plethora of preferences.

Not to be under-rated is texture –

They simply look like something you want to touch.
Can you say that about a petunia, geranium, marigold, or any other popular plant? Feel the waxy, rubbery coating, or spiny rosettes of the succulents. Plink the pliable thorns or lightly squeeze the over-plump leaves, and the response is freely expressed (if you’re young), “Whoa, this can’t be real.” Or if you are old like me, “Aw now that’s neat, really neat”.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Give credit to effective packaging for succulent popularity as they are sold solo, in groups, boxes, and baskets. This gives the consumer the option to quickly purchase only one, or a bunch! Now note those wonderful catalog images. Color and texture are effectively used to contrast and compliment those unique qualities of succulent plants. Growers have to appreciate how social media has broadcast the endless uses, possibilities and availability of succulents. Perhaps that alone has been the main connection with so many young people. Succulents are good for beginners, fascinating to look at, easy to care for and in recent years more affordable and available. They can be found on their cars, in their hats, dorm rooms, beer mugs, bed posts, bathrooms and strapped on their backpacks. Can you think of a plant more popular with our youth that wasn’t intended to be smoked?

Moving to more of the adult world, succulents have become a complementary element in floral arrangements, centerpieces at receptions, parties, events, and leave as door prizes. Individualities are expressed as people jam them into boots, baskets, birdcages, and whatever else is the latest idea from Pinterest.

Could this wave of popularity fade for succulents?

Possibly for some of the reasons of their popularity.

Them being more of a care-free plant, compared to most house plants, may contribute to their decline. Succulents are usually small and compact, allowing them to be placed in a variety of the wrong containers and places. Though the growing requirements are often listed, the message isn’t always followed. After viewing many “share-your-plant-problem-with-experts” sites, most images of sad succulents show the signs of overwatering, lack of good light, and poorly drained soil. The lack of knowledge can be countered with effective care instructions that remain with the plant and available for review as needed.

Overall, succulents are a welcomed novelty that is a breath of fresh air to the green industry and houseplant lovers. Spreading the message of the plant’s needs and proper care should be an effective support to keep its popularity and growth maintained.
